the internet and its ethos

the internet has no single controlling authority by design. it is wide and flat, marked by constant change and movement. it seems analogous to the american frontier – but its not murderous since its mainly populated by semi-autistic nerds.

it favors and values single minded determination and a multidisciplinary/roll up your sleeves approach to solving problems/creating disruptions/upsetting authority/creating new opportunities. that’s the american ethos and the web often reflects that — its citizen kane with a compute not a printing press.

creating products on the web is most effective when individuals or small teams are allowed to focus on creating/disrupting without interference; its basement/dorm room style of product incubation. thats exactly why groupon’s founder created a mock bedroom in the middle of his company.
